Just a note, I believe this explaination contains an error:

Code: Select all

'c'|'d'    =  1100111  <== 100, same as 'g'.
The decimal representation should be "103":

Code: Select all

jshell> Integer.parseInt("1100111", 2)
$31 ==> 103

Are we expected to know what the value of 'c'|'b' is? Or is it enough that we deduce that it can't be 'c' or 'd' themselves?

No, you are not expected to know the binary values.
