The explanation for answer option 1 says "In fact, MDBs can only throw system exceptions (exception that extend from RuntimeException). EJBException is one such exception."

However, according to EJB 3.0 Core Spec, Section 14.3.4, Application Exception will also be thrown by a Message Listener Method of a Message-Driven Bean, in addition to System Exception. This contradicts with the above explanation.

Yes, you are right. The explanation has been updated to, "In fact, MDBs can only throw RuntimeException and exceptions that extend from RuntimeException. EJBException is one such exception."
