Quick and Easy Setup

  1. Download etsviewer.jar and double click on it to run Enthuware Test Studio (ETS). There is nothing to install. It will show you an empty window with a Menu. Please see this if you have trouble running it.

  2. Select your Certification Exam and download the Question Bank.
    Download a Trial version of the Question Bank file.

    		 Download the Full version, if you have already purchased a license.
    (A Question Bank file is a file with .ets extension. You can also download the question banks from here if you have trouble downloading from above.)

  3. Use ETS's File ->Open menu to open the Question Bank file and follow the prompts. Please see this if you have trouble getting started.

  4. Purchase a License for the Full Version

Which Java Programmer Certification Exam should I take?

Technologies change fast. So generally, it is better to go with the latest version of a certification i.e. the Java 7 version. But in case of Java Programmer certifications, it is not that simple because to acquire the latest Java 7 Professional Certification (OCPJP7), you need to acquire the Java 7 Associate Certification (OCAJP7) first! In other words you have to take two exams - 1Z0-803 and 1Z0-804. But to get the Professional Certification for Java 6 (OCPJP6) you just need to take just one exam, which is 1Z0-851.

So if you don't want to spend too much, you can go with OCPJP 6. OCPJP6 covers about the same range of topics that are covered by OCAJP7 and OCPJP7 combined, except the new features in Java 7. You may take the Java 7 Upgrade Exam (1Z0-805) later to cover those features.

Another point to consider is that the OCPJP6 is a beast as compared to OCAJP7. It is a lot tougher than OCAJP7. Even experienced Java programmers have failed this exam on their first attempt. So if you are a Java beginner, you might be better off with OCAJP7 because that way you will have at least some certification, which might be helpful in your job hunt.

The only topic that stood out as being on the mock and not needing to know was the ranges that primitive objects could hold. A free 14 question trial is available so you can see what it is like before committing the $10. Yes, you read that right. You get 6 full length mock exams, analysis on your weak areas and the ability to retake questions by subject - all for ten bucks. Even though there aren't drag and drop questions, the mock exam still includes them because they are harder.

As usual, one of the most important parts of my preparation was the Enthuware's mock exam simulator. I think it's definitely worth its price, it consists of a great number of very high quality questions which reflects topics you're tested on during your exam. Really - read the specification or some book and do some Enthuware mock questions - it'll be definitely enough to pass this exam.
