The explanation does not look fitting to the question. In the question, SimpleDateFormat is used and in the explanation you recommend going through DateTimeFormatter specification. But there are some differences, for example in SimpleDateFormat there is no e specified.

Is knowledge of both those classes required for the exam or what is this about?

RIght, that is actually a problem with objectives. It is not clear exactly which one they are trying to test the candidate on. Although both of them are almost the same. You may safely ignore the minor differences because you will not be asked about them.
